Recall Election Memo – Wednesday, March 02, 2011

CITY OF JACKSONVILLE

Date:  March 2, 2011

To: City Council

From:  Jan Garcia, City Recorder

Subject: Recall election in January 2011

                                                            _____________________________

It was requested by a citizen at a City Council meeting in February 2011 that a breakdown of the cost to the City for the recall election was posted to the website.

Recall costs by Jackson County Elections Dept.:  $1520.88

Legal Fees, City Attorney Kurt Knutse: $176.00

Total                 $1696.88

This does not include any staff time that was directed to the recall effort.  I would estimate there were approximately 25 – 30 hours of staff time used for this effort.  The time was spent learning the process, discussing options with Jackson County Elections, delivering petitions to the elections department, discussing issues with the attorney and City Administrator, meeting with and phone calls to Mr. Smith, answering questions from the media and processing all the paperwork involved with the process. This recall spanned approximately 3 months from the first conversation to the final tally.
